Med Dialogues, Spena (One Water): “The Mediterranean Will Become a Hub for Water Sustainability and a Laboratory for Peace”
October 17, 2025 — Naples – The One Water Committee participated in the 11th edition of MED Dialogues 2025, held in Naples from October 15 to 17. This morning, Maria Spena, President of the Committee, spoke at the panel titled “Water Challenges in the Mediterranean Region: Cooperation and Exchange of Knowledge.”
The panel offered a unique platform to present the preparations and objectives of the Euro-Mediterranean Water Forum, scheduled to take place in Rome in autumn 2026, with participation from over 40 countries across the region. Moderated by Sarine Karajerjian, [Programming Director] at the Arab Reform Initiative, the discussion featured contributions from Alain Meyssonier (President, Mediterranean Water Institute – IME), Frida Krifka (President, CIHEAM – Centre International de Hautes Études Agronomiques Méditerranéennes), and Nasser Kamel (Secretary General, Union for the Mediterranean).
MED Dialogues, the leading international forum on Mediterranean affairs, is organized by the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI) and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI). The event served as a key opportunity to underscore Italy’s leadership in water diplomacy, especially in light of the upcoming Rome 2026 Forum.
Spena stressed that water security is a critical component of food security and, by extension, geopolitical stability. “Italy,” stated the President of the One Water Committee, “has a natural vocation to be a leading country in the Mediterranean — a sea destined to become a hub for water sustainability. In fulfilling this role, the Mare Nostrum also positions itself as a true laboratory for peace, development, and cooperation.”
